Mitomycin (Mitomycin) 10 mg
Mitomycin 10 mg is an antitumor antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces caespitosus. Active ingredient: Mitomycin C (10 mg).
Mechanism of Action:
It acts as an alkylating agent, causing cross-linking of DNA strands, thereby inhibiting DNA synthesis and cell division. It is uniquely versatile, used both systemically (IV) and locally (Intravesical instillation).
✅ Key Benefit: Gold standard for preventing recurrence of superficial bladder cancer.
Indicated for the treatment of:
- Superficial Bladder Cancer: Administered intravesically (directly into the bladder) after transurethral resection (TURBT).
- Gastric (Stomach) and Pancreatic Cancer: Used in combination chemotherapy.
- Anal and Esophageal Carcinomas.
⚠️ DANGER: Potent Vesicant! Extravasation causes severe tissue necrosis and sloughing.
Administration Routes:
- 💉 Intravenous (IV): Slow injection to avoid vein damage.
- 💧 Intravesical: Instilled into the bladder via catheter. The patient must retain the fluid for 1-2 hours, rotating positions to ensure contact with the entire bladder lining.
- Thrombocytopenia or coagulation disorders (bleeding tendency).
- For Intravesical Use: Perforation of the bladder wall (risk of chemical peritonitis).
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Warning: Delayed Cumulative Toxicity.
Bone marrow suppression (low platelets and white blood cells) typically occurs 4 to 6 weeks after therapy, much later than other chemotherapy drugs.
Other reactions:
- Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS): Renal failure (rare but serious).
- Pulmonary Toxicity: Shortness of breath.
- Chemical Cystitis (bladder irritation).
